John Varriano, American Artist
Quintet - Abstract oil painting
2012
About
In this painting, Varriano breaks the bonds of cubism and takes the world into the next generation of the interweaving of form, shape, space, and color. It is a brilliant example of the artist's, Crystalism painting style. Varriano defines Crystalism as “The faceting, dissecting and restructuring of form and space with the flattening of shifting perspectives and the use of brilliant color.”
The subject of this work is a quintet of classical musicians. Varriano made numerous studies while visiting the balcony of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City on Friday and Saturday evenings when they were performing in the early 2000s. Some of his on-site sketches were executed in a realistic manner, while others followed his Crystalism innovation. Contrasting the two styles reveals the artist to be gifted in figurative as well as abstract art.
Treatises on Crystalism offer an enlightening and insightful perspective into his aesthetic philosophy.
